Kannur University (KU) is a multi-campus public university located in Kannur, Kerala, established on 2nd March 1996 under Act 22 of the Kerala Legislative Assembly. The university was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister E. K. Nayanar. Interestingly, a university by the name "Malabar University" had already come into existence through an ordinance promulgated by the Governor of Kerala on 9th November 1995, which was later rechristened as Kannur University.
The primary objective of Kannur University is to promote higher education across the Kasaragod and Kannur revenue districts and the Mananthavady Taluk of Wayanad District. With its motto "TamasomΔ jyotir gamaya" — meaning "From darkness, lead me to light" — the university serves the entire North Malabar region of Kerala.
Kannur University is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC), affiliated with the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), and accredited by NAAC. It operates multiple campuses across Kannur, Kasaragod, Mananthavady, Payyannur, Mangattuparamba, Thalassery, Nileshwaram, and Manjeshwaram, making it one of the most geographically spread universities in Kerala.
