About Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha (DBHPS)

Established 1918 by Mahatma Gandhi · T. Nagar, Chennai (Madras), Tamil Nadu · dbhpsabha.org

Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha (DBHPS), headquartered in T. Nagar, Chennai (Madras), is one of the most historically significant educational institutions in India. It was established in 1918 by the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi, with the sole aim of propagating Hindi in the southern states of India. The first Pracharak (propagator) was none other than Devadoss Gandhi, son of Mahatma Gandhi.

DBHPS is classified as an Institution of National Importance by an Act of Parliament, placing it in the same prestigious category as the IITs. It is one of only 12 Institutions of National Importance in India and has the right to award degrees under Section 22(1) of the UGC Act. The Sabha emerged as part of the Freedom Movement, and leaders of the independence struggle felt the necessity of making Hindi a national language to unify the people and intensify national integration.

The Sabha's campus sprawls across 7 acres in Thyagaraya Nagar, Chennai. The foundation for its building was laid by Janab Abdul Hameed Khan, and the building was inaugurated on 7th October 1936 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who was then the President of the Indian National Congress. DBHPS has been led by some of India's greatest leaders -- Mahatma Gandhi served as its President from 1918 to 1948, followed by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and P.V. Narasimha Rao among others. The current President is V. Muralidharan.

The Sabha has provincial branches across all southern states and conducts various Hindi examinations ranging from preliminary levels to degree-level examinations. The first degree-level examination ‘Rashtrabhasha Visharad’ was conducted in 1931 with a convocation addressed by Kaka Kalelkar. The Sabha celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 1946, presided over by Gandhiji himself. The Mahatma Gandhi Convocation Hall on its campus is used for annual convocations and other functions.
