About Kumaun University, Nainital

Kumaun University (KU) is a residential-cum-affiliating state university located in the picturesque hill town of Nainital, Uttarakhand. It was established on 1st December 1973 under the UP State Universities Act and came into existence through the efforts of the state government to bring quality higher education to the Kumaun region of the Himalayas. The university is a permanent member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

The university's main campus is famously located at "Sleepy Hollow" in Nainital — a serene locale surrounded by dense oak and pine forests with stunning views of the Himalayan peaks. Kumaun University has been accredited by NAAC with an "A" grade (CGPA 3.04 in the second cycle) and is also an ISO 9001:2008 certified institution, making it one of the most credible universities in Uttarakhand.

Kumaun University is known for its research excellence, particularly in Particle Physics, Geology, Environmental Science, and Himalayan Biodiversity. Its departments of Physics and Geology have been recognized under the UGC's Special Assistance Programme (SAP), and the Physics department has been identified as a Centre of Excellence. The university has produced over 2,000 research publications and is home to recipients of the prestigious Bhatnagar Award. The main administrative and academic campus located at the iconic "Sleepy Hollow". Houses the Vice-Chancellor office, central library, and key PG departments including Physics, Geology, Chemistry, and more.

Almora Campus, Almora

The second residential campus situated in Almora, another beautiful hill town. Offers PG teaching in select subjects and contributes significantly to the university's research output in social sciences and humanities.

Bhimtal Campus, Bhimtal

The newer campus near the famous Bhimtal lake. Houses professional and technical departments — Bio-Technology, Management Studies, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and a Community College for vocational education.

In Kumaun University (as in most UP and Uttarakhand universities), students who fail in one or more subjects appear for the Back Paper exam. A "Special Back Paper" is an additional opportunity for students who still couldn't clear the subject in the regular back paper. The back paper results are published separately on the official portal and are also updated on this page. Keep checking back — back paper notifications usually come a few weeks after the regular result declaration.

Improvement Exam

Students who have passed but want to improve their marks can appear for the Improvement exam. This is especially useful for students looking to boost their percentage for higher education admissions or competitive exam eligibility. Improvement exam forms and schedules are notified separately by the Controller of Examinations.

Revaluation / Scrutiny of Answer Sheets

If you believe your answer sheet has not been evaluated properly, Kumaun University allows you to apply for revaluation (re-evaluation by a different examiner) and scrutiny (re-checking of totalling and unmarked answers). Applications must be submitted within the prescribed deadline after the result declaration. In some cases, students can also obtain a photocopy of the answer sheet through RTI or the university's prescribed process. The revaluation result is published separately.

Non-College (NC) & Ex-Students

Kumaun University uses the term "Non-College" (NC) for students who are not enrolled in any affiliated college but appear for exams directly. "Ex-students" are those who have completed their course duration but have pending back papers. Both categories can check their results on this page by entering their roll number, just like regular students.

Frequently Asked Questions — Kumaun University Result

When will Kumaun University declare the 2026 exam results?

Odd semester (Oct–Nov) results are usually declared between December and February, while even semester (Mar–May) results come out between June and August. KU result declaration can sometimes take longer than expected due to the hilly terrain and logistics of paper evaluation across multiple centres. We update this page the moment results go live.

What is the official Kumaun University result website?

Kumaun University results are published on kunainitalresults.com, which is the dedicated examination results portal. The main university website is kunainital.ac.in. On Result91, we link directly to the official result pages so you don't have to search for them.

What is the passing marks in Kumaun University?

For CBCSS semester programmes, the minimum passing grade point is 4.0 (P grade / 40% marks) in each subject. For annual-pattern courses that follow the division system, the minimum passing marks are generally 33% (Third Division). However, different faculties may have specific passing criteria — always check your course ordinance for the exact requirement.

What is the difference between Back Paper and Special Back Paper?

A Back Paper is the first attempt after failing a subject in the regular exam. If you fail the back paper as well, you get another chance called the "Special Back Paper". This is an additional opportunity provided by Kumaun University so that students don't lose an entire academic year. Both back paper and special back paper results are updated on this page.

My result shows "Result Not Found". What should I do?

First, double-check your roll number for any typing errors. If the roll number is correct, it means either your result hasn't been declared yet, or there may be a mismatch between the course/semester you selected and your actual enrollment. If the problem persists, contact the Controller of Examinations office or your college examination cell.

Can NC (Non-College) students check their results here?

Yes! Kumaun University publishes results for Regular, Non-College (NC), and Ex-students on the same portal. Just enter your roll number in the relevant result link. NC and ex-student results are sometimes declared a few days after the regular results.

How do I get my original degree certificate from Kumaun University?

After passing your final year/semester, you need to apply for the original degree certificate through your college or directly from the university. Kumaun University holds an annual convocation ceremony at the DSB Campus, Nainital, where degrees are distributed. If you can't attend, the degree can be collected later from the university or sent by post. The process usually takes 3–6 months after the final result.

My college was earlier under KU but now shows under SSJU. Where do I check my result?

This is a very common confusion. If your college is in Almora, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, or Champawat district, it was transferred to Soban Singh Jeena University (SSJU), Almora after its formation. Your old results (before the transfer) will still be on the KU portal, but new results (after the transfer) will be on the SSJU portal. If your college is in Nainital or Udham Singh Nagar district, it remains under Kumaun University — check results on this page.
