CHARACTERISTICS OF MANAGEMENT
Management is a systematic, goal-oriented process defined by seven fundamental characteristics, which are essential for every aspiring business student to understand.
- Goal-Oriented Process: Management exists to achieve a set of basic goals that form the fundamental reason for the organization’s existence. It unites the efforts of different individuals toward achieving these common goals.
- All Pervasive: The activities of management are common to all organizations economic, social, or political such as a hospital, a school, or a petrol pump. What managers do is the same everywhere, though how they do it may differ due to culture or tradition.
- Multidimensional: Management is a complex activity composed of three main areas:
- Management of Work: Translating the organization’s purpose (e.g., manufacturing a product or treating a patient) into goals and the means to achieve them.
- Management of People: Dealing with employees as individuals with diverse needs and as a collective group, making their strengths effective toward organizational goals.
- Management of Operations: Managing the production process, which involves the flow of inputs (material, technology) to transform them into desired outputs.
- Continuous Process: Management is not a one-time activity but a series of continuous, composite functions (planning,organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling) that are performed simultaneously by all managers.
- Group Activity: An organization is a collection of diverse individuals, all of whom must work towards fulfilling the common organizational goal. This necessitates teamwork and the coordination of individual effort.
