How to Calculate CGPA (Formulas & Step-by-Step Guide)
CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. Under the standard UGC Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), your CGPA is the weighted average of grade points earned in all semesters up to the calculation point.
The Standard CGPA Formula:
- SGPAi = Semester Grade Point Average obtained in semester i
- Ci = Total credit hours allocated to semester i
- Σ(Ci) = Total cumulative credits registered across all evaluated semesters
Practical Step-by-Step Calculation Example
Suppose a 2nd-year engineering student has completed 4 semesters with the following semester results:
| Semester | SGPA Scored | Semester Credits | Credit Points (SGPA × Credits) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semester 1 | 8.20 | 20 | 164.00 |
| Semester 2 | 8.80 | 22 | 193.60 |
| Semester 3 | 7.90 | 20 | 158.00 |
| Semester 4 | 8.50 | 22 | 187.00 |
| Total | - | 84 Credits | 702.60 Points |
Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) measures your academic achievement for an individual semester. It is calculated by multiplying each course credit by the course grade point, and dividing by total semester credits.
Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is your comprehensive degree average combining all semesters completed so far. It represents your overall academic standing for graduation, placements, and higher education.
