The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) Probationary Officer (PO) examination is the gateway to a career in prestigious Public Sector Banks. Understanding the roadmap from the preliminary stage to the final merit list is essential for every aspirant targeting the 2026 recruitment cycle.

The Three-Stage Selection Roadmap

The selection process is meticulously designed to filter candidates through three distinct tiers. Note that while the Preliminary exam is a crucial gatekeeper, only the performance in the Main examination and the personal interview counts toward your final selection.

Preliminary Exam: The Qualifying Hurdle

The Preliminary stage acts as a screening test. Candidates must be aware that scores obtained here are not considered when calculating the final merit list. The exam consists of 100 questions to be solved in a 60-minute duration, with a negative marking of 0.25 marks for every incorrect answer.

Preliminary Exam Pattern

  • English Language: 30 questions, 30 marks, 20 minutes
  • Quantitative Aptitude: 35 questions, 30 marks, 20 minutes
  • Reasoning Ability: 35 questions, 40 marks, 20 minutes

Mains Exam Pattern

The Main exam features both objective and descriptive sections. A negative marking of 0.25 marks per wrong answer applies throughout the objective paper.

  • General/Economy/Banking/Digital/Financial Awareness: 35 questions, 50 marks, 25 minutes

  • Data Analysis & Interpretation: 35 questions, 50 marks, 45 minutes
  • Descriptive Paper (Essay & Comprehension): 2 questions, 25 marks, 30 minutes

Final Merit List Calculation

Your final standing is determined by an 80:20 weightage ratio, where 80% is derived from your Main exam score and 20% from your performance in the 100-mark interview.
