BHEL has successfully commissioned India’s largest floating solar PV project. This 25 MW installation spans 100 acres at the NTPC Simhadri thermal power station.

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has successfully launched India’s largest floating solar power plant. Located on a 100-acre reservoir at the NTPC Simhadri thermal facility near Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, this project marks a significant milestone in India’s renewable energy sector. By utilizing the water surface, the project provides a dual benefit: generating sustainable electricity while reducing water evaporation through shading. Furthermore, the cooling effect of the water enhances the solar panels' efficiency, resulting in higher energy yields compared to traditional ground-mounted systems.

World’s largest floating solar power plant in India

Developed under the Government of India’s 2018 Flexibilisation Scheme, this project features an innovative, anchored floating array that avoids contact with the reservoir floor. Engineered to withstand wind gusts up to 180 km/hr, the facility utilizes corrosion-resistant materials to thrive in its coastal environment. Floating solar technology is a game-changer for India's 450 GW renewable energy goal, as it preserves valuable land and improves operational efficiency through natural cooling. The NTPC Simhadri plant powers approximately 7,000 households using over 100,000 PV modules, annually saving 46,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions and 1,364 million litres of water. BHEL remains a leader in this space, with an extensive portfolio and over 1.2 GW in EPC solar capacity.
The Simhadri Station also distinguishes itself as the first in India to integrate an open-sea intake from the Bay of Bengal, operational since early this year.

Solar Power Plant Meaning

Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plants operate by using mirrors to heat a working fluid, which then generates steam for turbines. Unlike Photovoltaic (PV) plants, CSP systems require significant direct normal insolation (DNI) and are tailored to specific geographical regions. Performance and seasonal output vary based on the plant design and the availability of thermal storage. Parabolic trough systems are specifically optimized for peak performance during summer months. Both CSP and PV systems can be managed to handle fluctuations, with modern solar designs providing essential grid inertia during variable weather conditions.
