One Nation, One Examination - NEET & JEE Merge: According to reports from The Times of India, the proposed model would replace separate entrance exams for Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology with a single, comprehensive test. Students would then use their unified scores to apply for various professional streams, streamlining the admission process.

In a discussion with The Times of India, UGC Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar explained that the regulatory body is evaluating a proposal to integrate multiple entrance tests into the CUET-UG framework. Mr. Kumar emphasized that the primary objective is to replace redundant exams that assess the same knowledge base with a single, standardized test, granting students broader opportunities to pursue diverse academic disciplines.

According to Chairman Kumar, this initiative aims to alleviate the immense pressure and financial burden associated with preparing for multiple entrance exams. A single, unified assessment will evaluate students across Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology. Furthermore, those not seeking engineering or medical seats will still have access to a wide range of undergraduate courses available under the CUET-UG framework.

Currently, approximately 4.3 million aspirants participate in India’s three major entrance tests: the Joint Entrance Examination (Main), the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG), and the CUET-UG.
Most students register for at least two, if not all, of these exams. While JEE (Main) tests Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, NEET-UG focuses on Biology. These subjects are already core components of the 61 domain subjects offered under CUET-UG.
This integration strategy seeks to minimize logistical complexities and reduce the significant stress placed on students.

UGC Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar stated, "The proposal is to integrate these examinations so students aren't subjected to multiple tests covering the same knowledge base. They should have one exam but multiple opportunities across disciplines."
He further added, "If a student aims for medicine or engineering but doesn't secure a seat, they can still apply for general education programs using the same CUET scores. It simplifies the ranking process and streamlines logistics for the National Testing Agency (NTA). Additionally, having one set of question papers will significantly improve exam efficiency."

The vision includes holding the entrance test twice a year. "The first session could occur after Board examinations, and the second session in December," Kumar noted.

Regarding the transition of NEET-UG from a pen-paper format, Kumar remarked, "The future lies in computer-based multiple-choice tests, as OMR-based evaluations still present challenges regarding accuracy and security."
